March 2015 at Descanso Gardens

Camellia & Tea Festival
Saturday & Sunday, Feb. 28 & March 1

Celebrate the camellia, a colorful blossom and a delicious tea! (Activities free with admission unless noted.)
  • Chado Tea Tasting, both days, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Sample a variety of teas and learn about tea (Camellia sinensis) from the experts of Chado Tea of Pasadena as you walk through the Camellia Forest.
  • Camellia Crafts, both days, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Bring the youngsters for hands-on creative art activities on the Magnolia Lawn.
  • Camellia Walk & Talk, both days, 10 a.m. & 12:30 p.m.: Take a guided walk of the Descanso Camellia Collection. Meet at the Center Circle.
  • Invertigo Dance Theatre Performance, both days, 10:30 a.m. & 1 p.m.: Enter a magical world of motion with Invertigo Dance Theatre. Enjoy a lively performance of dance and live music, followed by an interactive workshop.
  • Japanese Tea Ceremony, both days, 11 a.m. & 2 p.m.: Witness a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Tickets go on sale January 10 at brownpapertickets.com. $15; advance ticket required.
  • Camellia Lounge, both days, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Purchase special selections prepared by Patina, including grilled sweet corn and succulent citrus chicken.
  • Camellia Talks, Saturday, 1:30 p.m.; Sunday, 1:30 & 3 p.m.: Learn more about camellias and their care. The Saturday talk focuses on pruning camellias. On Sunday, the 1:30 p.m. talk discusses using camellias in floral arrangements. Brad King of the Southern California Camellia Society talks about camellia care at 3 p.m..
Sketching in Color
Saturday, March 7, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sketch the Gardens with instructor Virginia Hein in this one-day intensive workshop. Students will receive an art supply list with registration. Suitable for all skill levels. $30 members, $40 nonmembers. Registration deadline March 1.


Cherry Blossom Festival 
Saturday & Sunday, March  21 & 22
Welcome springtime with this annual celebration of Japanese culture and the beautiful flowering trees in the landscape. Enjoy music, origami, food and guided garden walks. Activities free with admission except where noted.
  • Cherry Tree Sale, both days, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.: Beautiful flowering cherry trees will be available for purchase at the Gift Shop. Get there early - these tend to sell out quickly!
  • Cherry Blossom Walk & Talk, both days, 10 a.m., noon & 2 p.m.: Take a walking tour of the many cherry trees in the Descanso Gardens landscape. Meet in the Center Circle.
  • Origami With Yami Yamauchi, both days, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.: Learn the traditional art of paper folding from an origami master.
  • Camellia Lounge, both days, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.: Purchase Japanese-inspired cuisine prepared by Patina, including teriyaki bowls.
  • June Kuramoto in concert, both days, 1 - 2:30 p.m.: June Kuramoto performs on the koto, the national instrument of Japan, in the Under the Oaks Theater. Kuramoto is a classically trained musician and a founding member of the Japanese-American fusion ensemble Hiroshima.
TOMATOMANIA! 
Saturday & Sunday, March  28 & 29

Back by popular demand, Tomatomania, the world's largest tomato seedling sale, returns to Descanso Gardens. Activities free with admission.
  • Plant Sale, both days, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.: Select from hundreds of healthy seedlings, including heirloom varieties, old favorites and unusual offerings.
  • Grow Great Tomatoes, Saturday, 10 a.m. & 1 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m.: Learn the basics of tomato growing at this lecture.
  • Tomato Faves from Patina, both days, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.: Purchase tasty tomato favorites, including homemade tomato soup, classic BLT sandwiches and a build-your-own Bloody Mary and michelada bar.
  • Tomato Cooking Demo, both days, noon: Learn some fresh new spins on cooking with this favorite from a Patina chef in this demo in the Under the Oaks Theater.
Admission to Descanso Gardens is $9 general, $6 seniors/students with I.D., $4 children 5 to 12; children 4 and younger free. Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
